EU Could Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says
The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
