Trump's Woke Warning Misses Europe's True Danger: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies represent an existential threat to the continent's identity. Yet, this perspective is based on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The actual challenge facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Between the US and Europe

The data paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a paltry 13.5% growth for the EU. During this time, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, about half of the global top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

The growing economic gap is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is Europe stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with Europe entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons explain this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a genuine unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, one can find reasons for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to propose substantial change. Notable analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, these assets could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and premier labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without bold steps to address its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
