Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Before this match, he said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
